SNK to no longer support the Neo-Geo

I know this is old news, but as of August 31st, SNKP will no longer offer support or repair to any of their home/portable consoles (AES, Neo-Geo CD/CDZ, Neo-Geo Pocket) carts and their respected accessories.  Out of all of my consoles, I think I logged in about as many hours in my Neo-Geo than my original NES.  I love the Neo-Geo and having SNKP announcing that they would no longer support the Neo-Geo, make me feel fell a little sad inside.

First of all, I’m really surprised that SNK Playmore would support the Neo-Geo this many years after the bankruptcy of the original SNK back in 2000.  The Neo-Geo AES is over 16 years old and to even offer support for a system that the mainstream has determine as irrelevant is cool in my book.  SNK’s Neo-Geo Pocket is probably one of the best handheld systems with great variety of different games.  The best version portable version of Magical Drop was released for this tiny titan.  I still feel the Neo-Geo Pocket version of SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium crushes its cluckier and inferior arcade sequel: SNK vs. Capcom: Chaos.  I’ve never had any problems with any of my SNK systems and I owned an AES and still own my Neo-Geo Pocket and MVS four slot, though that’s not saying that SNK didn’t have there fair set of issues with the Neo-Geo CD/CDZ, but it’s just nice to see that a company would stand behind their products as long as SNK did.  One question: What will come with the MVS (arcade) support?  I see that they will not support the home consoles but what about their arcade machines?

I saw my first MVS back during the Street Fighter II craze in the early 90’s and I was dying for some more 2d action. I was 10, didn’t live near an arcade and I wasn’t familiar with my neighborhood because we just moved out to Vegas, the only place to play any arcade games was at the 7-11 or Smith’s.  Who would want a machine that can play 4 games on one machine.   The best part is  no matter how new the games were, the p  rice was always $.25.  It was the chep ass cabinet of choice.

I grew up in North Las Vegas (near Pecos & Las Vegas Blvd), I spent most of my lunch money playing Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting at a small shitty convenience store called Purple Sage.  World Heroes and Samurai Shodown (eventually World Heroes 2 and Samurai Shodown II) at a Burger joint (I think it was called Circus Burger?) on Fremont by my High School and King of Fighters 94 at the 7-11 by my family’s apartment.  I basically had Las Vegas all mapped out based on what Neo-Geo (and Capcom) cabs.  Hell, I can still tell you were to find a cab with Puzzle Bobble cab and King of the Monsters.  Too bad arcades are all basically dead and conveince stores no longer allow cabs in their stores.  Those were the days.

Eventually I pick myself a Neo-Geo MVS one slot and upgrades to another cab with a larger screen and four-slot board.  I started my interests with arcade cabinets because of the Neo-Geo.  A lot of carts are muck cheaper than it’s home console counterpart.  Do yourself a favor and pick up an old Neo-Geo console or ports (or romz) and give the games some play.  If you have never played any SNK Neo-Geo games, then you’re doing yourself a huge disfavor.  I’ll be showing my love for the Neo-Geo by playing some Samurai Shodown II, King of Fighters 96-98, Metal Slug 1 and Magical Drop 3.  Damn I love the Neo-Geo.  Take care of it ’cause SNK won’t show you the love anymore.
