Jango’s EVO 2k7 Impressions… meh.

Evo 2k7 has come and gone and now I have a new vigor for Breakers Revenge. Sadly, I wasn’t very impressed with the way the event was ran this year. Mind you I had high expectations being that this was my first Evo event so really I don’t have anything to base my first comment so whatever. The turn out seemed high and I meet a lot of interesting people from across the country and around the world. I wished I could have seen more competitions because when a big group gathered around a good match, the fight wasn’t being projected onto the big screen. Noone could see anything! It’s a shame really. Oh wait, I guess this way if you want to see all of the great fights then wait for the DVD to be released. Bastards.
It wasn’t a total loss. The local Neo-Geo group built a really badass “headless” arcade cab. Basically, you connect your arcade boards, (Neo-Geo MVS, CPS II etc…) and connect the video signal to any television thus making a pseudo portable arcade cabinet. I really like the idea of a supergun cab with real joysticks attached to a cab. Hopefully I can get the blueprints from one of them or just make my own from scratch. The only difficult obstacle would be the video board. This looks like a future project for me! Woot!
The black cab was getting a lot of use with Breakers Revenge and it was nice to see so many people discovering this game for the first time. It’s a great Capcom-esque Neo-Geo fighter with good animation and a great fighting engine. Buy the MVS cart or download the romz. The blue cab wasn’t getting much love due to some grounding issues but after some spare parts and tightening up a few connections and hacking the harness in a few places, the Neo-Geo crew (with a little bit of help from moi) was able to get the cab back in working order.
The crowd was interesting and I got a lot of free Toyota junk, but all in all I do regret not signing for some competitions. In fact this whole weekend, I didn’t get any gaming done! Ironically, I know what game I wouldn’t sign up for: Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Why MvC2, because that was a very boring game to watch since everyone used Storm, Sentinel and Cable and I would want to play or watch someone play the same 3 characters, over and over. Boring. I wish they would implement a random rule and make the competitors use who ever they are stuck with thus proving who would be the world’s best and most adaptive fighter. Oh well, a fan can always dream right?
Well, maybe next year I’ll focus more of my time towards Evo. Maybe…

Told ya MvC2 was boring, at least on high-level play.
I personally thought the turnout was good, but I do agree that it needs to be run more efficiently. Next year I may take up at least two side tournaments: an MvC2 one with only low-to-mid tier fighters (that means Storm/Sentinel/Cable/Magneto/Psylocke/etc.) will be banned, and possibly more than one all-female tournament.
Granted, it’s still in the infant stages, but I definitely would like to see more MvC variety.

Krauser ftw.
Honestly, they need to switch over to single game, double elimination (since I’m pretty sure too many people would bitch if it was single elimination) to speed up play time. If it was just one match during pools and semis, with a switch over to 2 out of 3 for the finals, it would go a lot faster.
Dom-chan, I’m all for a low to mid-tier MvC2 tournament. The game sucks, but if I could see a lot of players actually using the rest of the cast, it would be at least fun to watch.

Well, I still want to get a mini tournment going at PCA headquarters. i would love a good match for the hardcore. And MVC2 doesn’t suck. Grrrrrrrrrr okay maybe alittle.
