Composer Sues EA Over UNLV Fight Song. Baldy Doesn’t Care.

Quite honestly, I don’t care about this story but since it’s about UNLV, the local college that I have no emotional ties to, I kind of sort of have to, you know? Living in Vegas and all…

Well, the skinny is that Composer Gerard Willis wrote “Win With the Rebels” and EA used the fight song in about 10 college sports game. The tinsey little problem is that Gerard Willis has only given UNLV limited licensing for the use of the song and well EA, as far as Gerard is concern, has no claim or permission for the use of her song. (Oops.)

[From the Review Journal]

“I think the UNLV band sounds great when they play it, and that’s what it was written for,” she said. “It was not written for commercial use.”

So Willis is going after the maximum amount she is legally entitled to at $150,000 per each copyright violation or $1.5 million total. So far there’s no comment from EA in the blogosphere and I really can’t see them trying to weasel their way out since they are so damn vicious with their “Rock Band” music licensing.
