Resistance 2 Impression

So after playing the Resistance 2 Beta for a week I have to say this game has great potential. I immediately jumped into the 60 player frag matches but sadly I dislike my first impression of the game. Resistance 2 looks nice but the competitive maps felt generic and boring, this is no Call of Duty 4. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel too chaotic and after playing the competitive mode for a couple of hours, I know I would not be buying this game, that was until I tried the 8 players co-op. This is where the beta shined brightly. After playing the co-op for less than 10 minutes I fell in love with this game and began to appreciated the potential awesomeness of Resistance 2.
From the beginning you have a choice of three classes. Taking a page from Team Fortress 2, you have to make sure your team is balance for maximum kickassery.
The first class is the soldier. You have a gatling gun with tons of bullets and health. Your soldier specific power is the ability project a force field that basically make you a walking shielded gun turret. Your primary function is to spear head through the defenses and create as much pain and havoc to the enemies. Nothing is cooler than slowly walking towards a large group of chimeras and just mow them down to oblivion.
The second class is the special ops. You are a lot weaker than the soldier but your main weapon is an assault riffle than can zoom in for the headshots. The long distance weapons makes up for the fact that you do not have nearly as much health as the soldier and your secondary ability is that you generate infinite ammo. You throw boxes of ammo to keep everyone lock and loaded and ready for any surprise. A special ops right behind the solider with his shield up is a deadly combination because the soldier soften to chimera defenses and the special ops can pick’em off.
And finally the third and my favorite class is the medic. You have a vacuum gun very similar to the medic from Team Fortress 2 and you are the only person who can give health to everyone. His gun wilii literally suck the life out of the chimera and slowly fill up the gun. The stream of health will then fill your weapon which you can then you can point the towards your teammates and fire the secondary weapon to throw a energy burst which will heal any teammate with in the vicinity of the blast. If you get overrun, the medic can switch to a generic machine gun and take out enemies faster. As far as I’m concern, this is the perfect class.
Nothing was more fun than having 8 guys taking out a squadron of baddies and then come face to face with a giant fuckin’ chimera with a huge chip on it’s shoulder and a big energy blaster. The solder is in the front line, shield up, drawing the attention to the enemy AI serving massive damage while the special ops is taking head shots and feeding the soldier his ammo. All the while the medics are in the background sucking away and chimera’s health and refilling everyone else’s health. The forced teamwork in co-op works and it would be a lot of fun to play with friends. With that being said, I only know less than 5 friends who even own a PS3 and not all of then are into console FPS so I’m not going to immediately rush out to pick up this game but I will in the future. This game has proven itself to me and I will support this game, eventually. The game will be release this Tuesday 11/4.
