Blurp: BlazBlue & Sengoku Basara X
I finally pickup my “collectors” box set or BlazBlue last night and I must say this game looked very impressive in high definition. It’s like eye candy to the XTREME!!!! Of course in true Arc System fashion, what little I was able to play of it reminded me why I stay away from their fighters. The game plays like shit and everything felt sluggish. I hate the way the game controls but that’s something I’m going to have to get use to it before I get to have any fun. I perrsonally feel that most Arc System fighters’ feels sluggish to me due to me naturally comparing them to SNK & Capcom fighters. I’m going to give this game more time before I can finally judge it properly.
I traded in my Xbox 360 version for the PlayStation 3 port for a couple of reasons. I really wanted that stupid bonus disc on Bluray and I knew I would not be happy with the DVD. It’s a lame reason I know… The Bluray disc and the two CD soundtracks are great but the true clincher for me was the little known fact that the PSP can sync with the PS3 thus unlocking remote play. What that means is if I have the game in the PS3, I can play it on the anywhere in the house with my PSP. It’s a cool little bonus that was enough for me to toss aside the Xbox port.

As an extra bonus, my copy of Sengoku Basara X came in the mail. After tinkering with BlazBlue for a bit, I decided to give this game a spin before heading out to work out. What sliver of gameplay I was able to taste test, this game seems to be cooked with the right ingredients for my fighting pallet. The controls feel was as tight as the on screen visuals. My only gripe about this game is the muddy visuals. Going from a high definition fighter like BlazBlue to Sengoku Basra X, the game just looked a bit muddy. Of course I can fix most of the washed out colors by adjusting my TV, but display issues aside, I had more initial fun with Sengoku Basara X. the true test is playing it with friends.
I made a promise to myself today to not dismiss Arc System as an illegitimate fighting company just yet. I’m going to give these two games some time and I’ll probably throw in Guilty Gear XX into my Naomi cab for good measure. If you are interested in a new 2D fighter for the PS3 & Xbox 360, give BlazBlue a chance by renting it. You might like, becasue I think I do…

The game has not really felt sluggish to me except when I am playing as some Iron Tager. I think it just might be the fact that there are more frames of animation for the characters in most Arc system fighters that it seems to take a little longer to perform a move. The controls feel pretty solid to me tho, but it is still taking some time to get use to the different D button attacks for each character. The only thing that really bugs me is the need and use of the barriers, which ends up just being more of a hassle at times. Plus the barrier burst is very underpowered and overall kinda useless in most situations. The one thing I am very impressed with so far is the online play. Every game I have played so far has been lag free.
Which port are you playing?
