Game of the Month: July

Pandora Radio Kicks Butt, Dude!

I download the Pandora Radio App for my  iPhone about  a month ago.  I dabbled with and found it to be pretty neat-o.  For those of you who don’t know what Pandora is, it’s simply an internet radio program.  You name an artist you like, for example, Nirvana.  Then the first song in your playlist will most likely be a Nirvana song followed by groups that are similar to Nirvana like Foo Fighters, Toadies, or Weezer, or whatever.

So why is this even worth mentioning?  Because I had just listen to this week’s Pinekast where I heard Jango and the Tenno talk about Anamaguchi, and they played one of their songs as an outro, so I deiced to put Anamaguchi in Pandora and LO and BEHOLD… I got nothing.  But I did however put in The Minibosses and they popped up!  So I was like, “cool!”  After them, Pandora played some song from The Advantage, which was cool, BUT THEN, I heard a band I never heard before called the Black Mages.

After listening to one of their songs, I now hunger for moar!  From what I can tell, they play Final Fantasy music, but done in the style of heavy metal.  I wasn’t familiar with the song, but it rocked hardcore.  It had heavy guitar, deep bass, and machine gun drums.  It was nice to find a new geek music group.  I mean, we all love the Minibosses, the Advantage, and the NESkimos and now, because of PAX , Metroid Metal and Anamaguchi is getting some lovin’, which is awesome.  Hopefully moar and more bands will become popular enough to be put on Pandora Radio.  And it also played music soundtracks from Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and Halo.  If you don’t have an iPhone, don’t fret, you can still listen to it on your computer at work and there is also rumors that Xbox is trying to get Pandora support for the 360!  And it’s free, so it’s a win win for everyone.

  • Can’t believe you haven’t heard of The Black Mages until just now. And considering that a man by the name of Nobuo Uematsu (ie: the guy that created the Final Fantasy music ;) ) It will come as no surprise that they play covers to various Final Fantasy tunes.

  • Yea, I’ve been a longtime user of Pandora. While it is cool, over time, the program will just end up repeating a laundry list of about 30 songs over and over. Then you have to add some other artists to the channel to mix it up, but even then it doesn’t really stop the repetition. But I’ll have to check out those few bands you listed. Sounds sweet!
