HDMI is sweet but with my recent purchases of aftermarket gaming headsets, I needed a way to dual use both the HDMI cable for video while still using the RCA audio for the headphones. For the PS3, it’s easy: just plug them in change a setting in the audio settings and viola, you are done. Unfortunately, Microsoft wasn’t so accommodating for their console.
The first thing you should notice is that the casing on the stock Xbox 360 AV cable is design to actually cover the HDMI port, rendering the chance of connecting both HDMI & AV cables at the same time an impossibility.
Some of you might be wondering why a person would need to run both cables. It’s actually quite simple. The HDMI will be the main video feed while the AV cable will provide the headset/headphone the audio connections it needs to pump awesome audio into your skull.
The official Microsoft solution is to purchase their Xbox 360 HDMI AV Cable kit that comes with an adapter and a HDMI cable for the outrageous price of $50. This method is bullshit. Follow these simple steps because there is a cheaper easy way to get RCA audio without costing you a red cent.
LET’S GATHER OUR TOOLS & PARTS!
ALL new Xbox 360’s are shipped with the default AV cables. You will need that cable to do this mod. Earlier Xbox 360s should have come with the component AV cables. Worry not my faithful readers, this hack will work on that cable as well.
The only other thing you will need is a knife.
Yep that is all. I’m using an old parrying knife for this project because for a ghetto hack like this requires a ghetto tool.
All you need to do to get the stock AV cable to fit is to remove the big oversized casing around the connector. Take your cutting blade and carefully slice open the casing.
(CUT AWAY FROM YOURSELF!)
Once the casing has been cut open, pry open the casing by twisting the knife. This will reveal the bare connector.
PROTIP: If you are using the Turtle Beach PX 21 or it’s counterpart, plug the main harness into a AV switcher. Just use that switcher for the audio connectors. By having your RCA headset audio setup like this, you can use your headset on either system with only a flip of a switch.
That is it! The whole hack should take you less than 5 minutes. It’s easy and your stock AV cable will work with your expensive gaming headsets. The best part is you just pocketed $50.
