Game of the Month: July

Zaku Preview

So my copy of Zaku arrived late last week and I’ve been enjoying this odd and frustrating shump for my Atari Lynx II. Unfortunately the excitement of playing a brand new Lynx game 15 years after the death of the handheld came little more sooner than later. Zaku for all intent and [...]

Zaku: A New Atari Lynx Game

Zaku

I completely forgot about this weird homebrew shmups for the Atari Lynx. Hey, you do remember the Atari Lynx right? Atari’s not so little handheld that couldn’t overtake the Gameboy back in ’89.

Anyways, Super Fighter Team, the same gents who released Beggar Prince & Legend of Wukong has now released a brand new shmup called Zaku. It’s a horizontal shooter where you control Zaku wolf/fox/mammal with serious ‘tude, dude where you fly about shooting shit. All I care about is that it’s a cool looking vivid shmup from my second most ignored handheld so this is a must buy in my book.

Even with the higher price of $48 (USD), I think a brand new Lynx homebrew would probably be worth it.

What do you guys think?

Atari XL 1010 Cassette Drive Review

The Atari 1010 cassette drive acts as nice little window to the past, back when the world had expensive floppy drives and you can use your regular old cassette tapes for data storage. The moment I found out about this device, I wanted to own this unique piece of history and test out a few games for the hell of it, you know, for the community sake, because nothing is more astounding that analog video game storage.

How to Repair Atari Paddles

headerpaddlerepair.jpg

I’ve been really getting back into retro gaming after I dug up my Atari 2600 and dusted off all of my carts a few months back. One of the greatest gaming experiences you can only get from an Atari is the old paddle games. I’ve recently upgraded to the 8-bit computer line and I’ve purchased Kaboom! for my 600Xl computer. Sadly, my paddles are acting wonking and no longer work like they should.

After doing some online research and getting advice from Sean of the local Game Repair center, I’ve compiled this simple walk through to restore your old flaky paddles and restore them to their former glory. And to keep with the simple Atari theme, here’s my walk-through with no written text. Well actually there’s text in the images but I’m tired and lazy to write descriptions to each picture so I hope I made myself clear as possible. Maybe if I get enough responses, I’ll actually do a real walk-through. For now, I’m going with the theory that picture = 1,000 words. Yeah, so enjoy my novel.

To be a good sport and keep the confusion down to a slight minimum, here the basic rundown of crap you will need to permanently fix those damn paddles, once and for all.

Eye Protection (Especially if you’re a noob, safety first)

Soldering Iron (my new best friend)

Solder (Duh)

Solder sucker (or you can use a solder bulb or a desoldering wick)

Adjustable wrench

Atari CX30 Paddle “Pot” or Potentiometers: item# CO10464 (Pick them up at Best Electronics for $10.00 a pair)

Phillip screwdriver

Oh yeah, here’s a really horrible video that I did while experimenting with iMovie so be kind… ;)

The Fun is in the Hunt… [Metal Gear] and other games. O_o

What I have here is a bunch of interesting retro games in many different media formats. Some are current but more are ignored and discarded. All of these things are cool junk that I received from my previous auctions, well with the exception of the Metal Gear Solid Collection. Take a gander at CD, [...]

Atari 1050 Floppy Drive Update

Okay Sean corrected me yesterday and he basically told me to disable the preloaded BASIC program by pressing and holding the OPTION button during boot up. I guess sometimes there can be a conflict with the disk drive and the BASIC program. So listening to good advice, I powered up a few [...]

Ahh! My Retro Atari Bug Just Won’t Stop And Atari Super Mario is Total Fail!

After upgrading the memory and picking up a few random carts to test out my 600XL, I felt if I wanted to truly experience retro gaming I needed to go back to the days before the NES. Back before pretty graphics and responsive controls, hence my new obsession over my Atari computer. After doing some research, I found that to expand my potential library, I needed to get either a tape drive and/or a diskette drive. I found a cheap tape drive on eBay and then Sean with Game Repair said he can hook me up with a diskette drive. NICE!

Still Loving My Atari 600XL

I’ve been in my discovery stage and I’m learning so much about the old Atari computers. My first impressions were a little skewed, but after doing more meticulous searching on Google, I learned that the Atari 600XL is considered a part of the Atari 8-bit computer line and that’s a good thing when games are concerned. So to get a better grasp on the Atari 8-bit computers, here a quick crash course in Atari computer history… God help us all.
