"So in effect, every technology ever created is inherently “flawed” because, at some point, someone besides the original creator will mod it in some way or another." - Jedah

That was a very profound statement on yer part Jedah, kudos, shame that you are arguing against it. If every technology was "un-flawed" when it came out, there would be no room for improvement or advancement. Maybe you really liked those giant, brick cellphones of the 80's, but I kinda prefer one that can fit in my pocket and won't give me brain cancer.

Anyhow, The concept behind the Nomad (playing console quality games on a handheld device) is good and worth improving on. But the Nomad itself is crap. Modding one is akin to putting spinners on a Yugo. Regardless of what you do, yer STILL DRIVING A YUGO.

I never buy strategy guides anymore, I just find it pointless as all hell. The last guide I bought was for FFXII, and I hated that game. In games I never use the strategy guides for whatever reason anyways... usually when I get stuck in games, it's more of a skill based thing rather than being clueless about where to go.

Nowadays I'll just use Gamefaqs or Google to find my answer, does a much better job and is a lot easier, but I will respect my classic guides such as FF7, Pokemon Red and Blue, etc.

I miss older Game Informers. They used to print retro game stratagey guides for games like Super Punch Out and MK II. They probably stopped due to pressure from Gamestop when Gamestop stopped carrying snes games and what not.

Jedah, you basically made the same arguement Tenno made when he was talking the problems with the nomad. The system was older therefore it isn't as good?

I wish I was excited for this, but this looks awful. I know graphics whore whatever, but 3-D is not Cave's forte. Their 2-D looks leaps and bounds better. If you're going to do 3-D, do it right. Don't just throw out some crap and hope it sticks. Just hire Treasure to do your 3-D and worry about the gameplay.

@Jango: They mention it on the page for it on Amazon: http://bit.ly/bh9Kwq; they also mention it here: http://bit.ly/1AhmAo. Granted, the only Mega Drive cart I can think of off the top of my head that I would want would be Hokuto no Ken (even though it kicks the shit out of everyone). But, indeed, it would bring the usefulness of the handheld way up.

One of the first I remember getting was a guide for Mortal Kombat 2. In fact, I still have on my bookshelf.

Guide books, for the most part, are wastes of money at this point. Any information about a particular section of a game or finding a specific item can be found online now. The amount of detailed information is staggering.

Fuck you Jedah. I love my PC Engine GT and my Sega Nomad equally. Both are just old out dated handhelds with their fair share of problems. I have a brand new PC Engine GT with sound issues so I need to replace that capacitor while my Nomad has a crap screen and no battery pack. I want to point out that you are going by new sticker price. In the aftermarket, both can be picked up for around 1 hundo dollars. Neither are really worth the price of admission unless you are a retro console collector. For casual collectors stay away from the TG Express due to hardware quirks*. The nomad has a shit screen BUT you could always hook it up to any TV and play it like that.

I also want to point out that Jedah is correct about the size between the two console. Of course the Nomad was bigger, the carts that it was designed to play are obscenely large when compared to the gameboy, Lynx or Gamegear carts of the day. Tenno's shoe comparison is stupid as it is retarded. Even with modern tech, having a hypothetical "Nomad micro", the handheld will still be as big as the cart, which by today's standard is too thick and bulky.

*Side note: The TG express is a great handheld it just that NEC released the system a little too soon and it was way ahead of the curve in terms of tech. The display resolution is too low and light bulbs that lit up the display sucked up battery light like crazy They had to go the cheap route and use cheap capacitors which after 20 years, have dried up.

I fixed my old TG Express that had a display failure and after replacing the video cap, the screen looked bright as day. Now I wish someone would do a screen upgrade on that handheld.

I will still stand by my fighter guides but the one strategy guide that help my enjoyment of a game has to still be the Pokemon guide. That game was so huge and at the time, I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the Gameboy game.

My first strategy guide (both the first time I used one and the first one I bought) was the NES Game Atlas.

http://tinyurl.com/my-first-guide

I use guides of all sorts mainly when Im most the way to earning an achievement and can't find the last few of something for said achievement or in occasional instances where the game does a piss poor job of letting you know where to go to proceed.

Also I guess Im sort of marketing sucker because whenever I get a new game I feel compelled to get the guide regardless of said guide is actually any good...if anything they tend to be a good read as far as the back story for the weapons, enemies and various other goings on in the game.

There is a problem with your example; the Turbo Express is a system with lesser technical specs and smaller card based media. Those two factors naturally lend themselves to a smaller form factor.

While it may be small, it had problems the Nomad did not suffer from. Due to a problem with cheap capacitors, sound failure was a frequent problem with the TurboExpress. The screen used in the TurboExpress was another source of problems; though it was state of the art when it was released, the LCD technology used was still fairly new and the rate of pixel failure was very high. Text was also difficult or impossible to read in certain circumstances, as many times fonts were written to be seen on a television screen, not on a small LCD screen. As a result, certain RPGs and adventure games could be difficult to play on the unit.

It also suffered from poor battery life (about 2-3 hours the same as the Nomad).

While it was 5 years earlier, it was also $120 more expensive ($300 compared to the Nomad's $180 price tag). Yea, sounds amazing. Pay $120 more for a poorly constructed portable TG-16 riddled with technical issues.

Think the first strategy guides I had were some of those 'How to Win at Nintendo Games' books. I was never big on guides since on most 1 player games they just ruin the experience. Although I am guilty of going to GameFAQs when I am stuck, but usually only in instances where I have to find out how to trigger some event that the game never eludes to.

I do approve of some guides. Personally I think MMO and fighting game guides act as a suppliment tool to the game. I use alot of the fighting game guides on GameFAQs, SRK, Dustloop and other forums sites since they go beyond move lists and combos and cover character match ups, frame data, and what not. They will usually have good videos displaying top level play or examples of tricks. The new Joo MvC2 guide videos are a great example of this.

So much hate I say! At the time, the Nomad was pretty awesome. I remember my Mom buying me it for Christmas and I was blown away. As much crap as you want to give the Nomad, it was released in 1995. We're talking about 15 years ago. Having a home console go portable was pretty sweet. You got to put it into perspective. The Nomad was much smaller than the home console Genesis, so in that respect I think it was much smaller.

or you cab buy a genmobile that has a better screen than the nomad, smaller, comes with a rechargeable battery, preloaded with 20 genesis games, and licensed by sega... all for less money that this guy is charging for the screen mod alone.

The original Nomad was crap. Legions of people with small pockets and battery life agree. Meanwhile, those with the patience to love their Genesis games where they belong -at home- smile at my humble ways.

Yes every system will be modded, and that's cool as hell.... still doesn't help the multitudes of people that were stuck with the shitty ass original Nomad back in the day. Case in point: people who justify their purposes with modded shit they don't even own.

So have you bought one of these better than normal Nomads? Yes? No?

If so justify your purpose sir? I am currently playing Bad Company 2 on HARDCORE mode and have little to no time for simpering bitches, laden with woe and justifying for portable systems that serve no more purpose than nostalgia for those that could never ever afford the original, nor even the decade late modified version.

PS: It's still bigger than a shoe. Deal.

*VIGOROUSLY POINTS FINGER*

OBJECTION!

So you admit to your own laziness and apathy!

*SHAKES HEAD THEN CROSSES ARMS*

I submit to you the jury Mr. Proto's own words as proof of my client's innocence. I then ask the court that Mr. Proto's libel testimony be stricken from the record. Furthermore, I request the court drop any and all current or future charges against Mr. Doma.

*SLAMS BOTH HANDS ON THE PODIUM*

Finally, I charge Mr. Proto with slander and defamation of my client's good name and demand swift, expedient, and just punishment for his verbal infractions!

*PROTO IS STRICKEN WITH A DEMORALIZING FEAR*

So in effect, every technology ever created is inherently "flawed" because, at some point, someone besides the original creator will mod it in some way or another. Thereby manipulating it to perform better ore more efficiently than originally designed by said creator. Congrats, you've single handedly discounted any and all technological creations from the past, present, and future.

Again, more solid logic. That's what I love most about you Tenno, you paint yourself into a corner. You do all the work for me. All I do is just come in and clean up. Thanks! ;)

BTW: And yes, it's a decent sized device. It was created for manly men with manly men hands. I imagine the GBA Micro is a behemoth compared to your tiny shiny moisturized girl hands.

Yeah. I bagged on the Nomad, and rightly so, since someone aside from the creator had to step in a decade later and fix it with modern technology to make it work. Meanwhile it's still huge, and not that efficient.

And I do own a 'Bag of the Nomad'.

ONLY PARTIAL LIES/EXAGGERATION

I'll say that was about a month ago, but I never looked into the archives at the time to check out the GotM.

Gotta play me some Star Fox though so I can feel included when I listen in on the round table for that one, unless I can find my way into the discussion itself haha.

I haven't even listened to the podcast yet, but the picture and description alone make this the best podcast ever crafted by human hands. Dr. Sam Beckett is my hero.

EDIT: SON-OF-A! You bleeped out Muramasa: The Demon's Blade. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ;)

I'm looking forward to XIII and will buy day one but part of me was thinking how cool it would have been for SNKP to resurrect the Garou/Fatal Fury series to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Neo Geo. Either a new game in the Real Bout style or a Mark of the Wolves 2 would have been brilliant.

Just DLed and did a quick play through. The game does look fucking awesome and I really like the risk/reward play style. I like the addition of the free playing ala Time Pilot sections. Seriously for only a buck you can't beat this.

I just played through that game and that game is fuckin beautiful. It's a great game. Only thing I didn't like is when you went to get a 1UP and you got it, I usually lost a ship in progress or the enemies started to fuck with me even more it seemed. It's probably just me though hahah. Nevertheless great game I reccomend it

[...] the Mad Catz sticks were much better for customization, and the EX2s were to be avoided. I had to follow a walkthrough to mod up my EX2, so I decided it was a good time to invest in a higher quality, more customizable [...]

That's why I've touched the little Spinner toy in the Blade Runner deluxe box like twice. Shit like that ends up being too fragile.
