A guy on a BBS in 1996 told me my geocities page was 'too loud' and it changed how I built every page since
Back in 1996 I had a GeoCities page for my comic book collection and I thought it was the coolest thing on the web. Bright yellow background, red text, three different fonts, a MIDI file playing automatically, and about fifteen animated GIFs of flaming skulls. Then a guy on a local BBS in Sacramento who went by the handle SpockFan77 wrote me a message that just said 'your page hurts my eyes, pick ONE background and ONE font.' I was annoyed for like a week but then I actually looked at it on a different monitor at the library and yeah, it was rough. I redid the whole thing with a black background, white text, and one font. I also turned off the auto MIDI because someone else mentioned it made their browser lock up. The weird part is people started staying on my page longer and actually signing my guestbook. I kept that habit for every site I built after that, simple backgrounds, readable text, and no music that plays by itself. Anyone else get a random critique on their old page that still sticks with you today?
