AOL chat rooms vs. IRC, which one really defined the 90s for you?

I spent 1997 on AOL with buddy lists and those little away messages, but my friend swears IRC was the raw real deal with actual strangers from Norway, so which one had the bigger cultural punch for people who lived it?
