Appreciation post: The sound of a 56k modem connecting was the best part of my day in 1997.
The before-and-after was the pure, chaotic screech of the handshake versus the sudden, beautiful silence of being online, a change that took exactly 45 seconds and was caused by my dad finally letting me get a second phone line.

Oh man, that second phone line was a total game-changer, wasn't it?

Seriously, having that separate work number changed everything. I could finally turn off notifications after 6 PM without missing texts from friends. It cut my work stress in half. My personal phone stopped feeling like a company device. That mental split is worth way more than the extra monthly cost.

I gotta push back on this one, @grayt46. Managing two phones or numbers is just another thing to keep track of, and for me that adds more stress than it saves. You still have to check two inboxes, remember which contact is on which line, and deal with the hassle of carrying that second device or switching SIMs. The mental split you mention works fine until you accidentally send a friend a work message or forget your work phone at home on a day you need it. I've seen people get so wrapped up in the separation that they miss important calls from their boss because they turned off the wrong notifications. All that extra cost and complexity feels like putting a bandaid on a problem that could be solved with one phone and some basic boundaries.
