Can we talk about how GeoCities pages loaded compared to modern sites?
Back in 1997, I had a GeoCities page about my cat that took maybe 10 seconds to load on dial-up, but everything came up in order. Now I sit here waiting for a simple blog to load while 17 trackers and 3 autoplay videos fight for bandwidth. Does anyone else miss when a page just showed you the content without all the extra nonsense?
The cat GeoCities pages were legendary. My old one had this glittery text that said "Welcome 2 my page" and it took forever to load all the sparkle gifs but at least it did. Meanwhile my friend Tommy had a page about his pet iguana that played midi files of "Axel F" on loop and you could hear it from down the hall on dial-up. Now I gotta wait for a recipe to load while some ad tries to guess my shoe size. Simpler times for sure.
