Dialed into a local BBS in Tulsa, got hit with a busy signal for 45 minutes straight
Back in 1996 I was trying to download a shareware game from a BBS called Night Owl's Nest in Tulsa, and the line stayed busy the whole time. I must have hit redial 30 or 40 times on my parents' phone before my dad picked up the kitchen extension and yelled at me to get off the line. I ended up waiting until after midnight when the sysop cleared a slot, and that 2 MB file took almost an hour. Did anyone else have a trick for snagging a spot on a packed BBS, or did you just keep hammering redial like I did?
Man, 45 minutes of busy signal is rough. My trick was calling right at 3am when all the normals were asleep. Sysops usually left a node open then and you could grab whatever you wanted. The other move was finding a BBS with more than one line, those were gold. Hammering redial works but your finger pays for it.
