Had to pick between a 28.8k and a 56k modem in 1997
Went with the 56k because the store guy said it was worth the extra $50, but my phone lines only supported 33.6 so I spent the whole summer waiting on a single JPEG of a skateboard deck to load halfway.

The store guy said it was worth the extra $50" - oh man, that takes me back. I did the same thing, splurged on a US Robotics 56k and my line would never connect above 33.6 either. I remember sitting there watching a picture of a Honda CRX slowly render line by line, and the modem would crap out halfway through every time. Ended up calling the phone company three times before they admitted my line was just too old.
