I finally admit the old dial-up BBS crowd was right about something
Back in 1995 I had a 14.4k modem and thought the local BBS scene in Dayton was for computer nerds with nothing better to do. My buddy kept pushing this text based game called TradeWars 2000 and I laughed at the green screens and ascii art. Then one night in February I logged in just to prove him wrong and ended up playing until 3am running fake cargo between star systems. The whole community had this weird code of honor where people actually helped new players instead of trashing them, which felt totally different from the flames I was used to on AOL. I still think the web blew those boards away, but the way those guys taught me about file transfers and modem strings stuck with me. Anyone here ever go back to a telnet BBS just to see if the old magic still holds up?
