I finally figured out why AOL chat rooms were better than IRC

Honestly, back in 1998 I swore by IRC for speed and cleanliness. But after helping a buddy set up his first computer last week, I sat through an AOL 3.0 session on his old Packard Bell and it hit me. The buddy lists, the profile photos, the little sounds when someone entered a room - it made talking to strangers feel personal, not like a command line. Has anyone else found a specific old platform that just clicked better for them than the popular one?

Oh man, that totally makes sense! I had a friend back in like 1999 who was dead set on using ICQ for everything, right? She had this whole collection of little status messages and custom sounds for each person on her list. One time she spent like three hours just organizing her contact list into groups with little avatars and personal greetings. She used to say IRC felt like shouting into a dark room while ICQ felt like having your own little apartment with doormats and welcome signs. I never really got it until I saw her actually tear up when she showed me an old ICQ backup file a couple years ago. It's wild how those little personal touches could make digital spaces feel like actual places you belonged.

Mary836, I read somewhere that ICQ's whole appeal was basically turning the internet into a neighborhood instead of a highway. Your friend's apartment analogy nails it.
