I was downloading a 4mb mp3 on a 56k modem in '98 and the connection kept dropping. My friend from school told me to rename the file extension to .txt while it downloaded and then change it back after. It actually WORKED, no more corrupt files.

Reminds me of the old trick to get free AOL hours by typing in fake credit card numbers. The 90s were a lawless place.

Wait, fake credit card numbers actually worked for that? I thought that was just an urban legend. The fact that AOL's system was that easy to fool is kind of amazing.

That trick was pure luck and probably messed up other files later. PaigeP10 is right to question those old stories, because a lot of them get remembered wrong. The 90s had weird glitches, but most "fixes" like that were just coincidence.
