Just found my old AOL bill from 1997 and it's a real shocker
I got hooked on a text-based MUD called 'GemStone III' and my parents' phone line was busy for 284 hours that month. The bill was over $400 because we only had one local dial-up number and I kept getting disconnected, racking up long-distance charges. Has anyone else got a crazy story about early online game bills?

My buddy's dad got a $600 phone bill from him playing Ultima Online. They lived just outside the local calling zone. He had to mow lawns all summer to pay it off.

Man, my friend's older brother got wrecked by EverQuest. He'd leave the dial-up connected all night for his crafting macros. Their family got a phone bill for like $500 because of cross-state long distance charges. His dad made him take apart the computer and carry the tower down to the basement as punishment. He had to do chores for a year to pay it back.
