My 1998 dial-up connection died right as I was downloading a 3MB Weezer mp3, and I still think about it
Last week I was digging through a box of old CDs at my parents' house in Sacramento and found a burned disc labeled "music 4 real." It was a bunch of mp3s I grabbed off Napster and Audiogalaxy back in 1999 on the family computer, and one of them was a Weezer song I spent almost 40 minutes downloading on a 56k modem. The connection cut out at 94 percent, which my dad blamed on my mom picking up the kitchen phone to call my grandma. I tried again four more times that night and every single attempt tanked before it finished, so I never actually heard the whole track until I bought the CD at The Wherehouse a few weeks later. Seeing that disc now, I can still hear the modem screeching and my mom yelling that she needed the phone line. Funny how a 3MB file felt like moving a mountain back then. Did anyone else lose a download right at the finish line because someone grabbed the phone?
