My dad said a 2400 baud modem was fast enough, and I believed him for a whole summer
Back in 1996 my dad drove me to a computer shop in Boise and told me to save the extra $70 and get the 2400 baud modem instead of the 14.4k, since it was "only for email anyway." Took me one afternoon of trying to load a single Simpsons fan page for me to figure out how bad that call was, the images crawled in line by line like a fax machine dying. Still remember the sound of that thing connecting, it was the slowest handshake in history. So what was the worst piece of tech advice you got from a parent that you had to live with for way too long?
Oh man, my version of this is my mom telling me in like 2001 that 128 MB of RAM was "plenty" and I didn't need to pay for the upgrade to 256. That machine ran Windows XP like it was wading through wet concrete for two years. I basically became a master of closing every program before opening a new one, which honestly is a skill I still use today. The worst part was she worked in an office so I figured she knew what she was talking about, joke was on me. Your dad at least had the excuse of email being mostly text back then, but mine had no excuse in 2001. Take this with a grain of salt though, since I'm the guy who later bought a $40 "gaming" mouse at a flea market, so my judgment isn't exactly gold either.
