My dial-up modem was screaming for six months and I had no idea why

Back in '97, I thought the horrible screeching sound my 56k modem made was just how it worked. I'd just turn the computer room speaker down. Then my friend came over, heard it, and said, 'Elliot, that's the sound of a bad phone line filter, you're losing half your speed.' I'd been connecting at 28.8 for half a year thinking that was top tier. Anyone else have a dumb tech mistake that took a friend to point out?

My first DVD player was hooked up with the composite cable for years before a buddy showed me the component inputs. The picture blew my mind.

My old CRT had those component jacks in the back I never used for like two years. I feel you, @henrys60, that upgrade was a total game changer.
