My first real chat room was on a Prodigy bulletin board in 1995 and it felt like magic.

I was in my parents' basement in Cleveland, the dial-up modem screaming, and I typed 'hello' to a user named 'PixelPirate' from Florida. We talked about the X-Files for two hours, and it was the first time I felt the internet could connect you to ANYONE. Did you have a specific early online chat that just blew your mind?

Wait you were on Prodigy in 1995? That is ancient, I thought I was early with AOL in 97. Talking to someone in Florida about the X-Files from a basement in Cleveland back then must have felt like science fiction. That modem sound is burned into my brain.

Ancient? That sound was my personal dial-up symphony.
