My old dial-up modem finally gave up the ghost last night after 25 years.

I was trying to show my nephew the glorious screech of a 56k connection and the thing just lit up with a solid 'no carrier' light, which felt like a proper send-off for a piece of 1998 hardware.

Damn, that's a solid run. When my old US Robotics box died, I tried the capacitor trick. Pop the case, look for any bulging or leaky capacitors on the board, the little cylindrical components. You can sometimes swap them out with new ones from an electronics store if you're handy with a soldering iron. It's a long shot, but cheaper than hunting for a working one online.

@the_mia Did the capacitor swap actually fix yours?

Man, that sound was the soundtrack to my teenage angst. I tried to explain the ritual of waiting for a picture to load one line at a time to my kid last year and she just stared at me like I was describing cave paintings. My own modem's death was less dramatic, it just sort of faded away like my hairline.
