My old dial-up modem gave up the ghost last night

I was trying to show my kid what the internet used to sound like, so I dug out my old US Robotics 56k modem from the garage. Plugged it into the phone line in my home office, fired up an old Windows 95 machine I keep around. The thing started its screeching handshake, got about halfway through, and then just died. A little puff of smoke came out the back and that was it, after maybe 25 years. I guess the capacitors finally gave out. It felt weirdly sad, like losing a piece of history. I know it's just a box of old parts, but it was my gateway to everything back in '97. Has anyone else had a classic piece of 90s tech fail on them recently? What did you do with it?

What happened to that Windows 95 machine after the modem died?

Man, that's a real bummer. It's not just old tech, it's a memory box that finally quit. What did you end up doing with the remains?

Kept the hard drive for the memories, recycled the rest.
