My older cousin insisted on using a 14.4k modem for 'better stability'

I mean, he was convinced the slower speed made fewer errors on our Prodigy dial-up in '96. I tried it for a month and it just meant waiting 20 minutes for a single JPEG to load. Anyone else get some truly terrible hardware advice back then?

My uncle swore by keeping the computer in the basement for "cooler air flow." The dust bunnies alone were a bigger threat than any heat, lol. Some advice just came from a different time.
