PSA: I almost lost my whole Geocities site because I didn't back up my guestbook

Back in '97, a friend in my webring told me my guestbook script was eating all my free hosting space and my site would get purged. I checked and he was right, the file was over 5MB from spam. I switched to a simple text counter and saved everything. Anyone else have a close call with early web hosting limits?

Honestly, a buddy of mine had her Tripod account deleted in 2000 because her animated "Under Construction" GIF was apparently too flashy and kept triggering some server resource warning. Tbh, she only found out when she tried updating her "Top 10 Anime Openings" page and got a 404. Ngl, it was a rough lesson in keeping things simple.

My Angelfire page got nuked in 1999 over a 10MB limit. The culprit was a MIDI file of the X-Files theme song on auto-play. I learned the hard way that web hosts didn't mess around. I still miss that page.

That X-Files MIDI was worth the nuke.
