Showerthought: I used to think those old banner ads from 1997 were totally useless... but maybe they were better than today's targeted stuff?

That "stalked by my own search history" bit is brutal but yeah, you're totally right. Changed my mind.

Wait, were those old Geocities banner ads actually more honest than what we get now? At least when some random banner told me I'd win a free trip to Hawaii if I clicked 50 times, I knew exactly what kind of scam I was signing up for. These days I get ads for dog beds three days after I search for "how to stop my dog from eating shoes" and it feels way more invasive. Sure I clicked on some dumb stuff back then, but at least I wasn't being stalked by my own search history.
