Spent 3 months missing old ICQ sounds, wrote a fix in one night
Back in the 90s I used ICQ on a 56k modem in Portland, and that uh-oh sound always made me laugh. Last year I wanted that exact chirp for my phone notifications, but every download link on those old fan sites was dead or a virus trap. Took me 3 months of digging through Usenet archives before I finally found a .wav file on a 1998 Angelfire mirror. It was 4 kilobytes and worth every minute, does anyone else still chase down those tiny sound files just for nostalgia?

Funny enough, I see it the opposite way. Chasing that exact 4KB file feels like going backwards when we finally have better sounds everywhere for free. The old ICQ chirp was cool back then, but now I just pick a random notification from my phone's own library and it works fine. A whole 3 months of digging for one sound seems like a lot of time when you could just move on.
