The web went from weird to slick and I kind of hate it.

I was looking at my old GeoCities page from 1997, then clicked over to a modern site. The change is huge. Back then, my page had a black background, bright green text, a tiled starfield gif, and a visitor counter. It loaded in maybe 10 seconds on dial-up. Now, everything is clean, fast, and looks the same. The cause? Big money and ads. Sites got polished to sell stuff, not to be a fun personal space. Does anyone else miss when the internet felt like a bunch of messy, homemade clubhouses?

Wait your page loaded in 10 seconds? Mine took like a full minute, easy.

Oh man, 10 seconds? That sounds like a dream. I had that same issue for a while and finally figured out it was my ISP throttling certain types of traffic. Not saying that's definitely your problem, but it's worth checking if your connection slows down specifically on heavier sites. Might also be an old router that's struggling, mine was seven years old before I finally swapped it and things got way better. YMMV of course but sometimes the simplest fix is just blaming the hardware first.

What made us trade personality for polish anyway?
