Trying to download a 4MB song on a 28.8k modem in 1995 and my mom picked up the phone

Yeah you had to time those downloads for the middle of the night. The trick was to start it after everyone went to bed and pray nobody needed the phone. Waking up to a failed download was the worst feeling.

Oh man, the STRUGGLE was real. I'd set an alarm for 2 AM just to check the progress. If it failed at 95% because someone picked up the phone to call their friend, you just wanted to scream. Learned to put a sticky note on the home phone as a warning, but half the time someone would just peel it off.

My dad would get so mad when I tied up the line. He had this whole system with the sticky notes too, but my little sister would always ignore them. It was like a nightly battle, @eric_carr. I remember downloading a game demo that took three whole nights, and on the last night my dad got a call from work. He was not happy. Did you ever have to explain to your parents what you were even doing?
