Found an old IRC channel from 1999 still running on a private server

I was digging through my old hard drive backups last weekend and found a bookmark for a Star Wars fan IRC server. Loaded it up on a whim and the channel was still active, but only two other people were connected. We chatted for about an hour about how the place used to have 200 users every night back in the early 2000s. The server admin apparently passed away in 2018 and nobody ever took it down. Has anyone else found a dead chat community that still technically works?

That server's probably costing someone real money every month without them even knowing.

It's wild how much digital stuff just keeps running long after anyone's tending to it.
