Rant: I bookmarked 200 dead links before realizing I was archiving the wrong thing
I used to save every GeoCities page I found to my bookmarks bar in Chrome, thinking I was preserving some kind of internet history, but last Tuesday I clicked on 47 of them in a row and got nothing but 404 errors and one parked domain ad. Then a guy on r/DataHoarder told me bookmarks are worthless because the files disappear the second the server dies, and I should be saving actual HTML files with a tool like HTTrack instead. So what do you all use to grab the whole site before it goes dark, or am I the only one who wasted a year doing this the lazy way?
