Should abandoned sites be preserved or just left to die? Found a local history page stuck in 2001

I stumbled on this old community site for my town that hasn't been touched since May 2001. It's got scanned newsletters and event photos from the 90s that are nowhere else online, but the code is ancient and a lot of links are broken. Do you think we should try to save these relics or just let them fade away naturally?

But who's actually going to keep that thing online once the last person paying for hosting finally gives up on it?

Man, I totally get where you're coming from @ivangrant. I used to think some random fan or a small group would just keep it alive out of love, but honestly, you're right. Once the money runs out, nobody's gonna pay for storage and bandwidth forever. It's a real bummer because those old sites hold so much history, but reality hits hard when you realize hosting costs aren't free. How long do you think before most of those niche projects just fade away?
