Somebody told me my dead site posts were boring because I only linked homepages, and they were right
About 6 months ago a guy named Dale replied to one of my posts about an old bowling alley site and just said "you keep linking the front door, show me the basement." I was annoyed for a day, then I got it. I had been pasting homepage links like that was the whole find, when the real stuff on these old sites is buried 3 clicks in. So now I dig for the weird pages first. Last week I found a page on a defunct pet shop site in Tulsa that was last touched in 2003, and it still had a staff photo and a note about a parrot named Chester that bit the owner. Nobody would ever see that if I just linked the homepage with a big logo on it. My posts take way longer now and I read way more old HTML than I probably should, but the replies got better and people actually dig around too. So my question is, am I the only one who thinks a dead homepage link is kind of a lazy find? Or does anyone actually like the front door posts?
