The old forum sig that still links to a dead webring

I was digging through a 2003 car fan site that hasn't been touched since the owner switched to a blog, and his signature still had a webring link pointing to a page that now just lists 404 errors. It got me thinking about all those little community networks we built back then, the webrings and link exchanges that basically kept small sites alive. Has anyone else stumbled on a piece of that old glue still sitting on a page, or do you think webrings made those early forums feel more connected than modern social media ever did?
