Unpopular opinion: The Wayback Machine is actually ruining how we look at old sites

I used to think the Wayback Machine was the greatest thing for finding dead sites until last month when I tried to access a Geocities page from 1999. The layout was all jacked up with broken image links and missing CSS, so I spent 3 hours trying to piece together what it originally looked like. That's when it hit me: we're not really 'finding' these abandoned sites, we're looking at ghost versions that don't capture the real experience of browsing back then. It's like visiting a museum where half the exhibits are just empty frames. Am I the only one who feels like we should just let some of these old pages stay gone instead of pretending the snapshots are authentic?

Way too dramatic. It's a free tool not a perfect time capsule.
