Update: I paid $40 for a dead GeoCities archive on a 'retro web' CD and it was empty
I know everyone here loves digging up old pages, but I want to warn you about paying real money for them. Last month I grabbed a CD off Etsy sold as a "lost GeoCities collection, 500 sites" for $40, and when I opened it, 480 of the links were just dead or parked domains. The seller had scraped a 2003 index page and never checked a single one, so I basically bought a fancy list of 404s. I got my 40 bucks back, but I still lost a whole weekend chasing ghosts. Has anyone here actually scored a real working archive from a paid source, or should I stick to the Wayback Machine forever?
