Chose a $40 Chinese AI device over a big brand smart speaker and Im surprised by the results

Last month I was looking for a voice assistant for my workshop. I had it narrowed down to two options. One was a name brand smart speaker for about $130. The other was this little AI gadget I found on a deal site for $40. The brand name one promised better support and updates. But the cheap one claimed to run a local AI model without needing the internet. I figured for $40 it was worth a gamble. I picked the cheap one and honestly it works fine for setting timers and playing music. The only catch is the voice recognition misses about 1 in 10 commands. Has anyone else tried these budget AI devices?

Local AI on a $40 device sounds a bit sketchy to me. Most of those cheap gadgets just cache a few commands offline and still need the internet for anything complex. 1 in 10 misses is pretty rough. My big brand speaker misses maybe 1 in 50. You might find that rate gets worse over time with no updates.

1 in 10 misses" still beats needing internet for every command.
