My fitness tracker hit 10,000 AI steps before I did, and I'm not sure how to feel
Last Tuesday I was sitting on my couch in Denver and my watch buzzed saying I'd hit 10,000 steps. I hadn't moved in two hours. Turns out the AI in the step counter got confused by my hand gestures while I was watching TV and logged a fake walk. I checked the app and it had added about 4,200 steps from just moving my arm around. Has anyone else noticed their tracker counting things it shouldn't, or is mine just broken?
Has anyone else noticed their tracker counting things it shouldn't" is kind of the wrong way to look at this. A step counter doesn't really know if you walked, it just watches for arm swings and guesses, so 4,200 steps from a couple hours of gesturing on the couch sounds about right for how these things work. Mine does the same thing when I fold laundry, and honestly I'd rather it give me credit for being up and moving around than miss real steps when my hands are full or I'm pushing a cart. The watch never claimed you walked a mile, it just logged what its sensor saw, so maybe the fix is your habits and not the device.
