Question about the new AI image models and copyright

I mean, I keep seeing people post AI art they made with Midjourney v6 and act like it's totally fine to sell prints of it. Idk, maybe it's just me but I read the terms and it says you can't use it for commercial stuff if the training data had copyrighted work, which it definitely did. I saw a whole Etsy shop in Seattle last week just full of AI-generated character art that looked straight out of a specific artist's style. Has anyone else run into this and figured out what's actually allowed?

So who's gonna stop them, the copyright police?

Copyright police" makes it sound silly, but real companies do go after people for using their stuff without permission. They send legal letters and file lawsuits all the time. It's not a joke if you're the one getting sued and have to pay a ton of money. The system is messy but it definitely tries to stop people.
