Update: a guy at the Austin AI meetup said my chatbot demo was 'just a wrapper' and I'm still thinking about it
I showed my little document Q&A bot at a meetup in Austin back in April, and a guy in a hoodie told me it was 'just a wrapper around someone else's model.' Half of me thinks he's right that building on top of other people's work means I didn't really make anything new, but the other half thinks every AI app out there is doing the same thing and shipping beats purity. Is stacking tools on top of big models real innovation, or are we all just gluing stuff together and calling it a product?
Ha, hold on, let me actually take hoodie guy's side for a second. If you're just calling an API and adding a text box, that is a wrapper, plain and simple. Think about it, McDonald's doesn't get to claim they invented the burger just because they put their own wrapper on it. The real question is what YOU added that wasn't already there. Did you solve a hard problem like chunking docs in a smart way, or handle weird edge cases, or make it fast and cheap? If yes, then fine, that's a product. If no, then yeah, you built a shell and someone else built the whole actual thing inside it.
