PSA: The way younger mechanics torque spark plugs has shifted fast

I remember when I first started 12 years ago at a small shop in Austin, every old timer I worked with would crank down spark plugs until they felt tight and call it done. No torque wrench, no second thought. Fast forward to about 3 years ago, I noticed the new guys coming out of A&P school were all using torque wrenches for every single plug install. At first I thought it was overkill, but after seeing three different engines with cracked plug threads come through our bay, I started to get it. The aluminum heads on newer planes just don't handle the old gorilla arm method. Now I see torque specs being checked even on the little Lycoming putt-putt planes. Has anyone else noticed this shift in how the younger crowd handles small fasteners compared to the old school guys?

Man, you're making me feel old and I'm only 32. I still catch myself cranking on things by feel sometimes and then remember "oh right, this isn't a 1970s cast iron block." I actually stripped a plug hole in my buddy's Cessna 150 last year being too cocky with my arm torque and had to helicoil it in the hangar while he watched. Real humbling moment when the torque wrench clicks at like 20 ft-lbs and you realize your wrist thinks "snug" means 50. The younger guys definitely have it right with the torque specs, even if it makes me feel like I'm using training wheels on my own damn tools.

@michaelrodriguez You're not alone on that one. I've been doing electrical work for years and still catch myself tightening conduit fittings by feel. That habit cost me a big job two years ago on a generator install. Snugged down the lugs on a transfer switch and cracked the plastic housing. Foreman just stared at me and handed me a torque screwdriver. Real humbling moment when something clicks at like 10 inch-pounds and you realize your arm is calibrated for old stuff. Younger guys with their clicky tools might look slow but they never have to helicoil anything.
