TIL a lot of guys at my hangar are using the wrong torque sequence on cylinder base nuts
I was helping a new guy button up a Lycoming O-360 yesterday, and he was going around the base nuts in a circle... like lug nuts on a car wheel. I stopped him right there. I learned the hard way on a Cessna 172 years back, doing a top overhaul and getting a small oil leak from a warped flange. The book says star pattern, working from the center out in steps, and it matters. Those cylinders have to sit flat on the crankcase, or you get uneven pressure and a path for oil. It seems small, but seeing it twice this month alone makes me wonder if this is getting missed in some shops. How do you all teach the right sequence to new mechanics?

Frame it the other way - people actually do read manuals, they just don't admit it because it's not cool or something. I've watched my husband spend 45 minutes on a shelf build, then get mad when I read the manual and find the instruction he skipped (and broke a board in the process). Manuals get ignored when something seems simple, but that's a trap. A lot of folks skim them for the setup steps and skip the safety warnings, which is honestly where most of the useful info lives (like how to not electrocute yourself). The real issue is that manuals are often written poorly or in tiny font, so people get frustrated and give up. But the ones who actually take five minutes to flip through them? They're the ones not calling customer support later.
