Unpopular opinion: I was wrong about using the generic torque seal on engine mounts

For years I used the cheap stuff from the general supply catalog, figuring torque seal is torque seal. Then a guy at the hangar in Fresno showed me the difference after a year of vibration on a King Air. The generic stuff just flakes off, but the proper aviation-grade compound from a brand like Jet-Lube stays put and stays bright. Anyone else have a specific brand they swear by for this?

Was I the only one who thought it was all the same stuff? I used the cheap tubes for ages, told myself it was fine. Then I saw a set of mounts I'd sealed myself six months back, and half the marks were just gone. It looked like I forgot to do the job. That visual proof is hard to argue with. Now I just buy the good stuff and don't worry about it.

Oh, the generic stuff is basically just expensive orange chalk (learned that the hard way too). I once had a whole line of it just vanish, like it got embarrassed and quit. The good stuff costs more, but you only cry once, when you buy the tube.

What about the price difference though?
