Pro tip: Label your wires BEFORE you button up the panel

Was doing a commercial job last week at a strip mall in Phoenix. Got all the sensors wired into the panel, double checked everything, closed it up. Next day the owner calls saying the back door alarm keeps false tripping. Spent 45 minutes tracing wires because I didnt label which zone went where. Had to pull the panel cover off 3 times. never again. Now I keep a roll of white electrical tape in my bag just for labeling. Anybody got a preferred method that works better than tape?

Spent 45 minutes tracing wires" - rookie numbers, man. I once spent three hours tracing a zone on a Saturday because I was too cool for labels. Felt like a detective but not in a fun way. Now I use a Brother label maker. Looks professional, stays stuck. My first time using tape I wrote "zone 3" on it and it peeled off in the heat. Found the tape ball on the floor. Learned my lesson.
