Walked into an old bank being converted into apartments yesterday
I was there to quote a new security system for the developer. Soon as I stepped into the vault room I realized the old alarm wiring was still in place from the 80s. Thick cloth covered wire running through these big metal conduits bolted to the walls. Took me 20 minutes just to trace where it all went. Does anyone else run into old installs that make you wonder how we ever got anything done back then?

Wait, cloth covered wire from the 80s? That stuff was usually phased out by the late 70s from what I've seen. I run into old installs all the time in older buildings and that sounds more like something from the 60s or early 70s. The metal conduits were overkill for sure but at least they didn't have to deal with the cheap plastic jacket stuff we use now that cracks after ten years.

Hang on, are you saying the cloth wiring in that 80s building was actually leftover stock from the 60s or 70s? I've seen some weird stuff in old houses, like a house built in 1982 that had a mix of old cloth wire in one section and brand new romex in another. Made me wonder if the builder just used whatever was lying around.
