Went to a church job site, their old panel wiring scared me

Inspected a 1980s panel at a church outside Tacoma last Tuesday. The zone wiring was twisted together with electrical tape and no labels anywhere. Anyone else run into nightmare retrofits like this and how do you handle the cleanup without blowing the whole day?

Twisted wires with tape is a classic 60s/70s install, and honestly it can still work GREAT if the connections are solid. You complain about no labels, but come on, that means the original guy knew the system so well he could trace everything blind. That's CONFIDENCE. Plus tape holds up way better than those cheap splice connectors people use today. You said it scared you, but maybe you're just not used to seeing real craftsmanship. Sure it looks messy, but if it's been running for 40 years without burning the place down, that's PROOF it's fine. You're making a mountain out of a molehill. I'd bet that panel has more life in it than some of the new plastic junk I see every week.
