A guy at the Habitat ReStore on Broadway walked me through picking a used door and I've been doing it wrong for years
I went in Saturday looking for a cheap interior door for my hallway closet and the volunteer there, older guy named Ray, spent 20 minutes showing me how to check a door before buying it. He had me hold it up to the light to look for cracks near the hinges, then he pressed on the corners to feel for soft spots and tapped along the bottom edge with my knuckle to listen for rot. I've bought three used doors over the years and just grabbed the first straight one I saw, which explains why the one in my bathroom has been sticking since spring. Now I check for a solid core and look at the hinge side first thing. Does anyone have a trick for fixing a door that swells up every summer, or am I better off just sanding the edge?
