Appreciation post: That $700 water softener saved my plumbing
I put in a whole house water softener back in 2021, cost me about $700 at Lowe's. My pipes were getting clogged up with hard water scale every few years. Since I installed it, I haven't had a single issue with low water pressure or a busted water heater element. It paid for itself after the first time I didn't have to call a plumber out for a service call. Anyone else in Albuquerque dealt with hard water damage in their older homes?

We put one in our 2015 house in Rio Rancho and it made a huge difference with the white buildup on faucets. The water heater especially thanks you for it.

City of Albuquerque started adding orthophosphate to the water around 2010 to help with the lead service line problem. That stuff can actually make scale worse on water heaters if you don't have a softener, because it keeps the minerals in suspension instead of letting them fall out in the pipes. I think a lot of people don't realize the water chemistry here changed a while back and that's part of why newer houses still get the white buildup.
